A long, beginner-friendly crochet shawl in bulky batik yarn, finished with three crocheted flowers. Soft, romantic and wonderfully easy to make.

Batik Flower Shawl crochet pattern worn as a chunky scarf

There is something magical about watching colors appear all by themselves as you crochet. The Batik Flower Shawl, my newest crochet shawl pattern, captures exactly that feeling. It’s a generous, chunky shawl worked in color-changing batik yarn, where soft stripes of grey, berry and white flow into each other row after row, without a single color change.

To make it truly special, the shawl is finished with three crocheted flowers in different sizes. They add a romantic, playful touch and turn a cozy winter wrap into a real statement piece.

Why I Chose Chunky Yarn This Time

Shawls are often crocheted with fine, thinner yarn, and while those pieces can be beautiful, they also take much longer to finish. This time, I wanted to try something different. I wanted to see how a shawl would look in thick, chunky yarn.

The result surprised me. The bulky batik yarn makes the stripes bold and the texture wonderfully soft, and the whole shawl simply looks gorgeous. The best part? It works up so quickly that you’ll have a finished shawl in no time, instead of weeks of work.

So if you’ve ever felt that shawls take too long to make, this is the pattern that might change your mind.

A Beginner-Friendly Crochet Shawl Pattern

The Batik Flower Shawl is rated easy / advanced beginner, which makes it a wonderful project if you’re just starting out or looking for a relaxing make.

What makes it so approachable:

  • A simple rectangular shape
  • Chunky yarn and a 6 mm hook, so your shawl grows quickly
  • The yarn creates the stripes for you, so there are no color changes to manage
  • Every step is shown with detailed photos, so no charts needed

The Magic of Batik Yarn

The heart of this design is the yarn. Batik yarns change color gradually along the strand, so every row brings a new shade. The result is a beautiful striped effect that looks far more complicated than it really is.

For my sample, I used WOLLBIENE Batik in colorway 5100 – grey berry white. The combination of calm grey, rich berry and crisp white feels soft and elegant, perfect for the colder months. The yarn is 100% polyacryl and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, so the finished shawl is easy-care and machine washable at up to 30 °C.

Want to use a different yarn? You can also use any other bulky yarn that works with a 5–6 mm hook. You might need about 950 m in total. Choose a color-changing yarn to get the striped effect, or go for a solid color if you’d like the flowers to take center stage.

Three Flowers as the Finishing Touch

Once the shawl is finished, you’ll crochet three flowers in different sizes, 5 cm, 10 cm and 11 cm, and add them as embellishments. They bring texture and dimension to the piece and give the Batik Flower Shawl its signature look.

Making the flowers is:

  • ✨ Quick and satisfying
  • ✨ A lovely way to practice new stitches
  • ✨ The perfect finishing touch for a handmade gift
